The State Bar of Georgia Veterans and Servicemembers Legal Assistance Project Home Front addresses the legal needs of veterans and servicemembers. The Home Front is staffed by the State Bar of Georgia Pro Bono Project, a Georgia Legal Services Program unit. The Home Front promotes pro bono and referral opportunities for Georgia lawyers, produces specialized training and other support for volunteers, and matches Georgia lawyers with veterans and servicemembers who have legal problems.
The Veterans and Servicemembers Project has produced two webinars- one covering the Veterans Disability Claims process and one covering the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). Nearly 100 lawyers have been trained in these online meetings.
The next free webinar, scheduled for April 21st, will cover the basics of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act) SCRA.
The SCRA provides a range of protections for individuals entering, called to active duty in the military, or deployed servicemembers. The Act is intended to postpone or suspend certain civil obligations to enable service members to devote full attention to duty and relieve stress on the family members of those deployed servicemembers. A few examples of such obligations servicemembers may be protected against are:
- Outstanding credit card debt
- Mortgage payments
- Pending trials
- Terminations of lease.
